Capron Ridge is built around a trail the Seminole Indians created to travel in proximity to the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, from roughly St. Augustine to Fort Pierce. Around the 18th century, the military used the trail as their munitions highway to establish our destiny to Florida. In the 19th century, early Brevard County settlers used the trail to move into central coastal Florida. Rich in pine trees and water, the area became a natural site for lumber camps and turpentine distilleries. And as late as the 1940's, cattle drivers used the trail to bring herds to market.

With respect to the natural history of the area and beauty of the wetlands, over 1/3 of the Capron Ridge area is preserved – including trail markers, wetlands and indigenous scrub jay habitat.
